During the French and Indian War, he commanded the 1758 Forbes Expedition which occupied the French outpost of Fort Duquesne.

Life
John Forbes was born in Dunfermline on 5 September 1707, youngest child of Colonel John Forbes, 1658–1707, who died several months before his birth, and Elizabeth Graham, daughter of an Edinburgh merchant.
