PJF Reads Modern Classics
The influential US Surrealist painter and photographer Man Ray emigrated to Paris in 1920s, positioning himself at the heart of the exploding Modernist scene.

His portrait photography gave him access to all the leading exponents of the Parisian art world, from the previous generation (Satie, Proust) to the new avant-garde (Picasso, Matisse, Hemingway, Joyce).
This memoir, written when the artist was in his 70s, is a curiously unsatisfying read, though.
He never wastes an opportunity to name-drop his famous sitters and friends, yet he doesn’t really seem willing or able to offer us any deeper insights. He went for dinner with Picasso a few times?… So what. As a celeb memoir, it falls pretty flat.
The areas where he could have provided us with juicier details are curiously absent; for example his three year affair with the famous surrealist Lee Miller goes completely unacknowledged. He brusquely dismisses her in one line as his ‘assistant’.&nb
